Silkroad's Sanctuary Tour: A Journey of Music and Community
Silkroad has announced its upcoming flagship touring program, "Sanctuary: The Power of Resonance and Ritual," curated by artistic director Rhiannon Giddens. Scheduled from March 10 to 28, 2026, the Silkroad Ensemble will visit eight U.S. cities. This initiative focuses on community music-making as a means to foster understanding and rebuild social connections, highlighting cross-cultural collaboration and audience engagement.
Giddens expressed the program's significance in today's world, emphasizing the importance of music's historical role in healing and unity. The tour features a diverse array of artists from various cultural backgrounds, including guests like Moroccan guembri player Mehdi Nassouli and Italian percussionist Mauro Durante. Performances will incorporate real-time improvisation, inviting audiences to actively participate.
Complementary free public events will deepen community ties, such as workshops and discussions in cities like Bowling Green, Fairfax, and Chicago. Giddens hopes these experiences will resonate with participants and create a shared sanctuary for all involved.
